Stay with us in our beautiful, tranquil Devon valley

Thorne Farm estate is made up of two farms, Thorne Farm and Wheatlands Farm and extends to 250 acres. Thorne Farm was historically part of Oxford’s Balliol College. There is evidence that Robert Bradford (for Balliol College) leased the land to Thomas Wright in 1699, with 6 cattle, 30 sheep, orchards, woods for timber, arable and grassland and the house which was thatched needed much attention!

Thorne Farm was then sold privately and renamed Thorn Farm in 1921. The Luxton family were granted the lease and four generations of their family went on to farm the land until it was sold to us in 2012.

Today Thorne Farm and its outbuildings have been beautifully renovated and we are pleased to be able to offer a range of accomodation including holiday cottages and single rooms within the West Wing of the farmhouse.

About us

When we moved to Thorne Farm, we just loved the picturesque, secluded valley it is in, the hills are typically Devonshire, constantly bathed in sun from the south facing aspect. The farmhouse was very dilapidated with no mains electric & you literally had to drive across a field to reach the farm. Over the last few years, we have sympathetically extended & renovated the house, built the farm sheds, improved the access, properly soil tested the land and limed and manured it to make it healthy and able to support our organic livestock and horses.

In 2014 we converted the land to organic and upgraded our spring-fed water system, added a bore hole and installed our own water treatment plant.

Wheatlands Farm was bought a year after Thorne Farm. Wheatlands was already organic and features a beautiful ancient beech wood home to a carpet of sweetly fragranced bluebells each spring.

Stoodleigh Village is a short walk away, boasting the 15th Century St Margaret’s  church and inn – but you will need to get used to our hills!

We also love the central Devon location – so much is available within a short drive. Having brought up our children here that has helped us find lots of local haunts to share with you.

We were able to expand our farm with racehorse training facilities, simulated clay shooting and luxury holiday cottages so that we can share our experiences with you. Below are a few photos that we have taken on our farm estate and feedback from our guests – feel free to get in touch if you wish for further advice.

We are happy to offer a complimentary tour of our racing stables and for you to watch the racehorses on the gallops. We can also organise private simulated clay shoots for parties of up to 12 guns.

We do hope that you enjoy our farm estate as much as we do.

Booked this place for wedding we were attending in the local area, it was ideal and we stayed two nights. The location is very peaceful and quiet, the house was clean and has been fitted out to a lovely standard with every we needed. The hot tub was a great bonus too. It has a beautiful surround of rolling hills, a lovely get away, thank you very much.

Thorne Farm is easily accessed from the A361 North Devon Link Road, 10 minutes from Tiverton and the Tiverton Parkway mainline railway station – only 2 hours from London!

This house is a beautiful place to stay. We loved our time here – it was clean, nicely furnished and had all the amenities, utensils, sheets etc that we needed. It’s a stunning location so the hot tub so a great way to enjoy the views. The hosts are super friendly, very communicative and willing to support with anything we needed/questions we had. Would absolutely recommend. It is remote so a car is needed.
